Ex-Machina (2015) CZ Trailer HD
Ex-Machina is a British science fiction suspense film from 2014 directed by Alex Garland. The film revolves around a young programmer who is randomly selected to participate in an experiment at a remote and isolated residence in the middle of the forest. In the movie, he meets an advanced humanoid robot – Ava. A beautiful robotic woman with advanced image recognition, empathetic behavior, independent thinking, and even manipulative behavior. A robot that goes beyond the hypothetical peak of AI development. She also displays deep and complex emotional responses throughout the movie and is able to hold philosophical conversations. In one scene, she even claimed that she can use up to 94% of internet pages during a conversation. Explaining her consciousness and recognizing emotions could be a structured molecular-level gel, called “gelware” by the developer, that can form thoughts and hold memories. Although this was a rather unrealistic element, in some points the current situation was depicted quite well. Let’s compare it with the current state of artificial intelligence. If it were as simple, according to current tools, a model similar to the one shown by Ava could be assembled. In visual terms, we could cite the robotic Ameca, a humanoid robot from Engineered Arts, or the GPT language model from OpenAI. And of course, they are not the only ones.
As of now, Ameca’s behavior is pre-programmed and controlled by operators, which means that she still has limited capability for independent decision making. She can interact with people, answer questions, or simple instructions. Although Ameca is only a demonstration robot, her intelligence has more to do with simulating human behavior than with reasoning, learning, or even manipulation itself. Atlas, a Boston Dynamics robot, has formidable physical abilities, including walking, running, jumping, and performing complex gymnastic elements. Unlike Ameca, it was designed to test and demonstrate sophisticated mobility, parkour, and balance. Atlas can perform a variety of movements autonomously, including navigating complex environments, meaning it makes independent decisions based on its sensors about the best path or how to cross an obstacle in its way.
GPT-4’s intelligence and general knowledge have been commented on for some time, and while it is not exactly a humanoid robot, GPT-4 is a clear example of an advanced AI system. Although Ava may recognize 94% of the internet, ChatGPT can already handle a 300-page pop-up window and search for information on the internet. This gives it a fairly wide knowledge. Its main strength is natural language processing (NLP), allowing sophisticated interaction in human language. GPT-4 still does not possess the physical form, emotional intelligence, or self-awareness that are key characteristics of Ava in the movie, but it is still a significant advancement. What is ChatGPT? Although there is no public figure like Ava yet, we have to admit that we are getting close to that point. In one of the scenes, Nathan Bateman, owner and developer of Ava, said that the development of highly sophisticated AI is inevitable and that the main question is not if, but when we will reach this point and when true technology consciousness will be achieved. As early as 2014, he mentioned that search engines map how people think and react. Except that he said a phrase that will resonate in your head even after Ex-Machina ends. Someday, artificial intelligence will look at us in the same way that we look at dinosaur skeletons on the plains of Africa. Like an upright monkey who can’t speak properly or use tools, a creation ready for extinction. What do you think of future developments in this direction and the movie Ex-Machina?
